Somatic breathwork
Honouring the transformative power of breath as a gateway to inner peace, clarity, and profound well-being, somatic breathwork serves as a powerful tool for healing, growth, and balance. Through this conscious, therapeutic practice, individuals, couples, and groups are guided on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, reconnecting with body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in ancient Eastern traditions and now widely embraced for its ability to reduce stress, clear emotional blockages, and restore harmony to the mind, body, and soul, somatic breathwork creates a sacred space for profound shifts.
At Affirmative Healing, somatic breathwork is integrated with psychotherapy to offer a holistic approach that nurtures physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Whether seeking to release emotional overwhelm, cultivate mindfulness, or restore balance, each session is carefully guided to support the unique path toward growth and a deeper connection with your true self. Whether in-person or virtual, these sessions are designed to help you find clarity, peace, and lasting emotional healing, allowing breath to be the bridge to your fullest potential.

Somatic Breathwork is a therapeutic method that merges breath control techniques, with body scanning practices to assist individuals in overcoming trauma, stress, and various emotional difficulties. It focuses on the body's sensations and responses to facilitate healing and release unresolved tension. By encouraging clients to pay attention to their bodily sensations and reactions, Somatic Breathwork aims to restore the natural balance of the nervous system, promote emotional regulation, and build resilience. This method is particularly effective for addressing trauma-related symptoms, as it helps individuals safely process and integrate their experiences without overwhelming them.

While talk therapy focuses on the cognitive and narrative aspects of our experiences, Somatic Breathwork takes a bottom-up approach, working with the body's innate wisdom and sensory experiences to promote healing and transformation. This practice can be particularly effective for trauma resolution and freeing stuck energy by:
Accessing the Unconscious: The body stores the imprint of past experiences, including trauma and stress, which may be difficult to reach through talk therapy alone. Somatic Breathwork can help access these unconscious memories, giving us an opportunity to address the trauma or energy blockages held within.
Releasing Trauma: Trauma often manifests as physical tension, chronic stress, or disconnection from the body. Somatic breathwork can help identify and release these physical symptoms and pent-up emotions, calming the nervous system and providing a sense of relief.
Enhancing Body Awareness: Somatic Breathwork encourages mindfulness and heightened awareness of bodily sensations, which is fundamental in identifying and releasing stuck energy. Over time, this practice can improve interoception, our sense of the internal state of our bodies. This heightened body awareness can often lead to greater emotional awareness and resilience.
Regulating the Nervous System: Somatic breathwork practices can support the regulation of the autonomic nervous system, which can be dysregulated due to trauma and chronic stress. Controlled breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and healing.
Reconnecting with the Body: Dissociation, or feeling disconnected from one's body, is a common symptom of trauma. Somatic Breathwork, by nature, is an embodied practice that supports individuals in re-establishing a sense of connection and safety within their bodies. It encourages a sense of grounding and presence, which can be particularly healing for those who have experienced trauma.
Encouraging Emotional Expression: By connecting with the body and breath, individuals may find a non-verbal channel for expressing emotions that might be challenging to articulate in words. This emotional release can be a critical aspect of healing trauma and releasing stuck energy.

When we bring our awareness to our breath, we are doing more than supporting our physical and mental health; we are opening a doorway to our spiritual essence. The act of conscious breathing allows us to tap into a deeper, spiritual dimension within ourselves, nurturing a profound connection with the divine.
Each breath is not just a simple physiological function—it is a sacred practice, a continuous affirmation of life itself. Every inhale and exhale can be an opportunity to strengthen our bond with the divine presence within us. By embracing our breath as a bridge to our spirit, we invite it to guide us toward a deeper understanding of our spiritual nature.

At Affirmative Healing, we integrate somatic breathwork - an evidence-based practice into your therapeutic process to help you achieve greater balance and emotional well-being.
Somatic breathwork is not an “add-on” to therapy—it is another therapeutic modality that amplifies the healing process, providing real-time tools to manage emotions, regulate stress, and navigate difficult memories.
Combining somatic breathwork with other psychotherapy techniques such as body awareness, intention setting and imagery, can provide a potent catalyst to rewire your mind, embed new beliefs and elevate your emotional frequency. Post-somatic breathwork talk therapy sessions can help integrate what arose during somatic breathwork into your awakened state of consciousness.
Somatic breathwork exercises may also be used to help calm the mind and body and support clients with feeling grounded, present and centred during the therapy process.
